Unplugging & Unwinding: A Bucolic Escape to Frog Meadow, Southern Vermont

Preview

There’s a particular kind of peace that settles over you when the rumble of city life fades into the gentle hum of crickets, when concrete gives way to gravel, and when the hurried pace of the week is replaced by the unhurried rhythm of nature. This past weekend, my fiancé and I chased that feeling all the way to Southern Vermont, to a truly special haven nestled high atop a mountain, reachable only by winding dirt country roads: Frog Meadow Farm.

And let me tell you, it was everything our souls craved, and then some.

As our tires crunched along the miles of unpaved roads, climbing higher and higher, we could feel the everyday stresses gently peeling away. By the time we pulled into Frog Meadow's drive, framed by vibrant fall foliage just beginning to blaze in fiery reds and golds, the silence was almost deafening – a glorious, restorative silence where you can truly hear yourself think. This wasn't just a place; it was a profound invitation to embrace tranquility.

Frog Meadow Farm: More Than Just a Bed & Breakfast

For those unfamiliar, Frog Meadow Farm is a unique and wonderfully welcoming bed & breakfast specifically for men. It’s not just a place to lay your head; it’s an experience, rooted in the genuine warmth and hospitality of its hosts, Dave and Scott. Set on a sprawling historic Vermont farm, it’s designed as a sanctuary. From what we gathered, they offer a variety of accommodations, from cozy guest rooms in the main farmhouse to private cottages dotted around the property, each designed with comfort and rustic elegance in mind

Amenities abound here, all geared towards relaxation and connection with nature. We learned they boast a spring-fed swimming pond, extensive walking and hiking trails right on the property, and of course, the incredibly unique wood-fired hot tub we had the pleasure of enjoying. The entire ethos is about disconnecting from the digital world and reconnecting with oneself, one’s partner, and the natural world.

Our Weekend of Blissful Solitude

And disconnect we did! Our phones went into airplane mode the moment we arrived, tucked away in a drawer, silencing the constant barrage of notifications. The aim was simple: to embrace pure solitude, to luxuriate in the quiet moments, and to simply be.

Each morning began with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of a homemade breakfast. Dave and Scott are culinary wizards, crafting delicious, hearty meals that often feature local ingredients, prepared with a warmth that makes you feel right at home. It was the perfect fuel for days spent in blissful idleness or gentle exploration.

Our cozy cottage became our personal sanctuary. We spent hours simply relaxing in plush bathrobes, reading, chatting, or just gazing out at the verdant (and soon-to-be-fiery) landscape. The nights were utterly peaceful, the kind of deep, restorative sleep you only get when surrounded by nature's hush, far from any artificial glow.

One of the highlights was undoubtedly the old barrel wood-fired hot tub. Nestled privately amidst the trees, a crackling fire warmed the water to perfection. Soaking under the vast Vermont sky, steam rising into the crisp autumn air, was an utterly magical experience. It felt ancient and luxurious all at once – a perfect blend of rustic charm and indulgent relaxation.

Exploring Southern Vermont's Charms

While Frog Meadow encourages quiet contemplation, the surrounding area is ripe for gentle exploration – perfectly aligned with our love for local gems. We spent delightful afternoons frolicking on Frog Meadow's own nature trails, immersing ourselves in the serene beauty of the Vermont woods and enjoying the early stages of the breathtaking fall foliage.

In the evenings, we ventured out to nearby towns for dinner. Southern Vermont is dotted with quaint villages, each boasting its own unique character and, thankfully, fantastic eateries. We loved browsing the cute antique shops, each a treasure trove of yesteryear's stories, and old-fashioned general stores that felt like stepping back in time. Our absolute favorite stops were the farmers' markets, bustling with local growers and artisans. We stocked up on harvest goodies – crisp apples, homemade preserves, and vibrant squash – a perfect taste of Vermont to bring home with us.
